TROY, Mich., — Walsh IT/Decision Sciences department chair and assistant professor Dave Schippers, Sc.D., CISSP and associate professor Christopher Heiden contributed research to Automation Alley’s 2019 Technology in Industry Report, which was revealed on April 29, 2019 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Schippers’ research focused on the industrial internet of things (IIoT) and cybersecurity of cyber physical systems on the manufacturing line. Heiden contributed data protection research related to cybersecurity in IIoT.
The report, titled “Industry 4.0: From Vision to Implementation,” is a guide to Industry 4.0 implementation and includes research from Michigan and Canadian universities and corporate insights, with a goal of helping manufacturers succeed in the rapidly changing Industry 4.0 landscape.
“Cyber physical systems, which are sometimes referred to as smart devices, add a level of new complexity to cybersecurity,” said Schippers. “Data needs to be protected, but so do physical devices and their ability to perform. When you consider that cyber physical systems include medical monitoring devices, autonomous vehicle systems, manufacturing machinery, and smart grids, cybersecurity is truly about protecting our modern way of life.”
