TROY, Michigan — Sept. 1, 2020 — Scott Lawrence, a Metro Detroit professional headshot and business photographer, is proud to have recently shared his video services with the teachers, staff and families of Rochester Community Schools (RCS).

As his business, like countless others across the country, recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lawrence was able to volunteer his services thanks to an Oakland County Small Business Recovery Grant. The project allowed K-5 teachers to connect with families and students as they prepared for the 2020-21 school year to launch online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One 8-minute welcome video let educators share insight with families into how they developed the new RCS Virtual Campus curriculum for elementary students, what the program entails and more.

As an RCS parent, Lawrence sees the value of these virtual connections when in-person is not possible.

“When school closed in the spring, RCS and McGregor Elementary stressed the importance of maintaining the relationships between students and their teachers and friends. I didn’t fully appreciate it until my son’s first class Zoom call in late March or early April. He spent over 90 minutes chatting it up with his teacher and friends. And of course they got down to business (learning) too. That was the most focused he’d been school closed. The hurdle to building and maintaining those relationships is even higher now with a remote start for so many schools across the country. So I wanted to do what I could to help establish new relationships,” Lawrence said.

Additionally, Lawrence worked with McGregor teachers to give them an opportunity to create a welcome video for their new students.

“The excitement and dedication these educators bring to a simple welcome video is so inspiring,” he said.

These videos showcase the services beyond headshot and business photography that Lawrence offers. produces brief videos for businesses and professionals to introduce themselves or their products to online audiences.

“Video has quickly become an essential marketing tool for small businesses, and creating what I consider to be talking headshots feels like a natural way to build on the still images that help people get to know the professionals that make the businesses run,” he said.
