ROCHESTER, Michigan, Wednesday, July 7, 2021: No matter what age, every child loves having new back-to-school supplies and clothing. But not every child’s family can afford to buy them.
This year, children like 5-year-old Addie won’t have to worry about starting kindergarten without new pencils, crayons and notebooks. Or wonder if she’ll have new clothes to wear on her first day of school.
That’s where the community comes together.
School supplies, books and more will be free to Addie and about 450 other school-age children at the fifth annual Blast Off 2 School event to be held Saturday, August 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Rochester.
Each child will receive a red Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan tote bag filled with their own personal choice of clothing by size and color, along with school supplies and other items. The children are also eligible for school physicals at a nearby hospital.
The event is a partnership of three groups: Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, Neighborhood House and Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital, where physicals will be given.
The event will be contactless as it was in 2020, and eligible families who have pre-registered with Neighborhood House must pick up bags curbside by appointment only.
“We love teaming up with Neighborhood House and Ascension Providence Rochester to bring this wonderful program to so many families each year,” said Assistance League President Luanne Offer. “Even though the worst of the pandemic is likely behind us, local schools must plan educational programs for this new school year. Our hope is that we make sure all area children have school supplies, clothing and physicals.”
Each student’s bag will contain a new hoodie, socks, underwear, long-sleeved T-shirt, age-appropriate book and hygiene kit. Other items include school supplies – everything from three-ring binders and dividers to spiral notebooks, pens and pencils, erasers, Elmer’s glue sticks and flash drives.
The event is free for Neighborhood House clients with families who have children ages 4-18 and live within the agency’s service area of Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Oakland Township, Leonard and Addison Township.
