St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s (SJMO) Trauma Services Department, in partnership with Star EMS, will conduct a free car seat safety inspection. Star EMS provides emergency and non-emergency ambulance service in Oakland County.

The free child restraint inspection will look for expired, recalled or damaged seats and provide education for guardians. Certified Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) will check to see that the seats are installed properly and that child restraints are positioned to prevent injury.

According to Safe Kids USA (safekids.org), when installed and used correctly, child safety seats and safety belts can prevent injuries and save lives. Child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by up to 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers (age 1-4).

Safe Kids USA also reported that:
· Child safety seats reduce fatal injury by 71 and 54 percent, respectively for infants and toddlers in passenger cars.
· Compared to seat belts, the use of child safety seats reduces the risk of injury among young children by 71 to 82 percent and fatal injury by 28 percent.
· In 2009, 309 children under age 5 were saved due to restraint use. That same year, among child passenger deaths, 31 percent of children under age 4 and 42 percent of children age 4-7 were unrestrained.
· Children are more likely to be properly restrained when the driver is properly restrained.
· African American children age 8-12 have the lowest restraint use among children; about 28 percent are not restrained while riding in a motor vehicle.
· Children should ride in a car seat as long as possible, as long as the child is within the height and weight requirements described by the manufacturer. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.
· Children should ride in rear-facing child safety seats as long as possible. They should remain in a rear-facing child seat until they are at least 2 years old or reach the highest weight or height allowed by the manufacturer of the child safety seat.
· Children age 2 and up or those who have outgrown their rear-facing safety seat, should ride in a forward-facing car seat for as long as possible.
· Return the product registration card provided for all new child safety seats to the manufacturer to ensure you will be notified of any recalls.

Northwood University will host its Annual Freedom Seminar May 17-20, 2012, in Dearborn, Michigan. Entitled “An Agenda for Progress and Prosperity,” the seminar will provide direction and solutions for the financial, economic and public policy challenges before us today.

According to Dale Matcheck, chair of the Economics Department at Northwood University, the Freedom Seminar, “Is as timely as ever.”

“We are in the midst of a lingering worldwide recession and everyone is looking for answers–in Michigan, the U.S. and around the world,” explained Matcheck. “The Freedom Seminar will provide ‘answers’ in the form of real solutions from proven leaders.”

This year’s Freedom Seminar is the 34th offering from Northwood University and will be held at The Henry in Dearborn, MI. Over the course of three-and-a-half days participants will explore pressing financial, economic and public policy matters, particularly as they relate to private enterprise.

“The U.S. economy is trying desperately to recover at a sustainable pace but has yet to do so,” stated Dr. Timothy Nash, vice president of strategic and corporate alliances and Fry endowed chair in free market Economics at Northwood.

“The hidden truth is that our economy is not as healthy as people and politicians want to believe. America is less competitive and less free economically than we were relative to the rest of the world just ten years ago. These are the kind of hard-hitting topics that the Freedom Seminar will dissect,” Nash continued.

National and international experts in banking and finance, economics and public policy will address some of the most “hotly contested” topics today including: the prospects for the global economy; disparities in state and national incomes; the future of capitalism and the American dream; America’s middle class; the ethics of free markets; and achieving global competitiveness.
