St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s (SJMO) Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management (MNWM) Program now offers free, public informational seminars at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the hospital’s Franco Communications Center, 44405 Woodward Ave., Pontiac.
The physician-directed seminars are for individuals interested in diabetes prevention or treatment, state-of-the-art lipid/cholesterol management and weight management. During the seminars, attendees will learn about the serious medical complications of being overweight and how the Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management program can help them.
The seminars are conducted by Tom Rifai, MD, Medical Director of the MNWM program. Dr. Rifai earned his medical degree at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and sub-specialized in clinical nutrition. Dr. Rifai also is certified by and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists.
In 2008, Dr. Rifai served as the Associate Medical Director for The Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, Fla. Upon returning to Detroit, he designed a comprehensive metabolic gourmet menu—called Andiamo Lean—for the Andiamo Restaurant Group with the group’s executive chefs. He also helped the Warren Consolidated Schools launch an ultra-healthy lunch program.
Dr. Rifai’s specialties are nutrition, prevention of chronic disease, weight management, nutritional and medical management of insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia and obesity.
